This program is for players of all grades interested in participating and competing in “over the board” OTB tournament chess. Face to face lessons will be longer with the purpose of competing as a team. Teams generally consist of players from the same grade and school. A minimum of 3 players are needed to be competative.
Even though it’s possible every grade at every school could have its own team, “Chess Team” positions will be initially limited to between 13-22 students.
To qualify, students must try out. Try-outs will be free and may take the form of a tournament in September during the September meetings.
The top 22 students will be invited to participate that are rated 1000 and higher.
Otherwise, the top 13 students will be invited.
Tournament fees are an additional cost if participants choose to participate in those extra events. Parents will be invited to participate in the “SoWashCo Chess Team Booster Club”. The boosters will be needed to help with transportation and some supervision for tournament play not covered by the registration fee.
